Powersuit Productions’ touring show The Culture written by Laura Jackson is a warm and pacey inside view to the relationship of two flatmates as they navigate their past traumas and dating in the modern world. It is billed as ‘a story about deep and enduring friendship’, and it’s exciting to be able to sit in on the New Zealand debut of this Sydney-set production.
Jack McGeeGaslight Me completely subverts my expectations of solo shows. It pulls me in with a familiar hook, then throws it out the window and laughs in my face. You thought this was a show about someone being gaslit by a shitty boyfriend? HAH! It’s about so, so, so much more. It rocks. It is a ride I am utterly thrilled to be along for.
Jack McGeeThere is a lot of art about rebellion. Some might argue that the role of meaningful art is to challenge conformity. Pretty much every story ever told is about someone breaking off from the group, or deviating from routine. It is hard to be interested in the status quo. It’s a perpetual, unsympathetic, overdog.
Jack McGeeMy favourite moment of Keegan Thomas’s standup special Enter the Sandman is when he describes going to see Click with his father. He tells us that this is the only time he saw his Dad cry. My initial reaction to this line, along with most of the audience, is laughter.
Sorry, what? Austin HarrisonTristan Miller comes to us all the way from South Dakota, via New York to bring us his charming and energetic stand up show Manic Impressive. It’s a show about Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety, Depression, ADHD and the comorbidity of it all. Just a casual Sunday at the Cavern Club.
Alia MarshallThere is something so fundamentally human about dance. Although I’ve always had a case of two left feet, I find myself wanting to dance anyway, especially when I see others do it. So while watching Search Party in the Dome at BATS, I’m reminded of this love of movement. Search Party is a triple bill of short performances - two solos and one duo - by Measured Frenzy Co., a group of emerging artists primarily based in Tamaki Makaurau. Each piece looks at something completely different, and the talent of these rangatahi is through the roof.
